From hobby to candidate for the doctoral programme of law                                                                                                                         One of the big dreams and goals of my life since I was young has been to study for a doctoral degree in law. My big hobby has for many years been research in Saami law and I have collected during this years a great archive- and research material in Sami land- and water rights.  I have also published several books and juridical articles about Saami law. From having being an interest in my free time during a long period this has resulted in full time studies in the doctoral programme of Law at Department of Law, University of Umeå .

The aim of the research is shortly to clarify the Saamis right to land and water, and describe the history of Saami law development. The research will contribute to understanding in the knowledge of Saamis right to land and water. The Saami rights are an area of law with big grey fields where we have today a very little knowledge. This has also contributed to a lot of law cases between Saami and non-Saami for clarifying of law from middle of Sweden to the north.

But, I'm not the first Saami who has been working on a doctoral degree of law.

The first Saami who became a doctoral in law in Holland for 365 years ago!                                                                                              The South Saami Johan Gerhardsson Jonæ was the first Saami who made a doctoral degree of law year 1641 at University of Leiden , Holland .

Johan Gerhardssons fathers name was Gerhardus Jonae and was a priest in Skellefteå 1623-1629. Gerhardus Jonae was his name in Latin and his real name Gert Jonsson. Gert Jonsson descended from Giertsjaure in the Saami village of Gran . His grandmother was registered in the Church books as a Saami from Saami village of Gran in the County of Västerbotten .

Johan Gerhardsson was in November year 1626 accepted as a student at university of Uppsala and made a Candidate of Philosophy in year 1635. Gerhardsson continued his study abroad which was usually at the time. As mentioned he made the year 1641 Juris Utriusque Doktor or a doctor of law.

Year 1642 after his arrival to Sweden he became a judge at Court of Appeal in Stockholm .

Johan Gerhardssons was the first and only Saami who has been ennoble as a knight and took the name Johan Graan. It has been speculated if Johan Gerhardsson chooses the name Graan after the Saami village of Gran and his fathers’ origin or after the name of the village where he was growing up.

Johan Graan was appointed February 4, 1653 to governor of County of Västerbotten and chooses Umeå as new residential city of the county. Johan Graan was the third governor of the county of 1653 - 1679. County of Västerbotten was the largest county in Sweden at that time and included also County of Norrbotten and County of Österbotten .

Governor Johan Graan was famous for the theory of parallel living. He believed that new settlers and Saami could live side by side because they used the same land in different way without interfere with each other. The theory of parallel living was the basis of the first law concerning immigration of Swedish people to the Saami area 1673, (Lapp mar ksplakatet).

The second Saami who became a doctoral in law year 1999 in Norway !                                                                                                 The second Saami in history who made a doctoral degree in law was Ánde Somby with thesis ”Law as rhetoric” February 27, 1999 at University of Tromsö, Norway. Somby was LL.B. at the Faculty of Law, University of Oslo 1987 and comes from Buolbmát in Deanu gielda - Tana Community, Norway .

The first who became a doctoral in law in Saami rights!      Kaisa Korpijaakko-Labba was the first person who became a doctor of law in Sami rights in 1990.

The second who became a doctoral in law in Saami rights and the first in Sweden !                                                                                                                                                                                               Christina Allard was the second who became a doctor of law in Sami rights and first in Sweden year 2006. Allard was also the first who became a doctor of law in Sami rights in Sweden at Luleå Technical University . Christina Allard thesis was "Two Sides of the Coin: Rights and Duties - The Interface between Environmental Law and Saami Law Based on a Comparison with Aoteoaroa/New Zealand and Canada".

GENEALOGY - A teamwork in teamwork                                                        Nowadays I have been interested in genealogy. Actually it’s my relatives in Sweden and Norway who has persuaded me to try out genealogy. Now we are working together, and for genealogy unusual, in teamwork with goals, planning, dividing tasks towards final results.

Will the year 2007 be the 400 years breakthrough?                      The latest genealogy research about the family Lasko shows tracks 377 years back in time from the youngest in the family Lasko, Gunnar Lasko, to the 12:th generation back in time. There are no detailed information about the 12:th generation back in time, except that his name is Nils Tjaank,  born around 1630 and probably from Northern Arjeplog in Northern Sweden.

Everything indicates that year 2007 will be the 400 years breakthrough in genealogical research about family Lasko.
